While cooking can be one of the most
fulfilling activities of the day, if you don’t know the
safety rules of the kitchen, it can also be one of the most
dangerous. Most household accidents occur in the kitchen. Here are
some tips to help make your cooking experience pleasant and
safe.
Cooking is an enjoyable pastime for many
people. But along with the pleasures of creating a delicious meal
for your family and friends to enjoy comes the responsibility of
maintaining a safe and hazard-free working area. Here are some tips
to keep you safe in the kitchen.
How to Dress For Cooking
When cooking, you should dress comfortably
yet in a manner that helps you avoid burns and spills.
Shoes – You should wear flat-soled
shoes that help you balance as you move around the kitchen and help
to minimize falls. Cloth shoes are not recommended because these
shoes will absorb spilled liquid that will prolong burning if the
liquid is hot. Leather, close-toed shoes are the best type to
protect you from burns caused by spills and falls caused by
spills.
Clothing – Wear clothes that are
comfortable and easy to clean. The kitchen is not the place to wear
your favorite dress clothes – not only do you stand a chance
at ruining your favorite outfit, your cooking experience is less
relaxing because you worry about ruining your favorite outfit. Arm
and legs should be covered for protection; however, leggings should
not be worn – leggings will absorb hot liquids and prolong
burning of the skin.
Jewelry – Jewelry should be kept to
a minimum – to protect both you and your jewelry. Long,
dangling jewelry can pose safety hazards when working around
kitchen appliances.
Hair – Since hair is flammable, it
is important to keep hair contained by pulling it into a ponytail
or wearing a hair net. This will also help to keep loose hair out
of food and reduce the risk of hair getting caught in appliances,
such as blenders and mixers.
Nails – Long nails can pose a danger
to both your food and yourself. Long nails can harbor germs that
can contaminate your food. Long nails can also interfere with
proper knife skills and increase your risk of getting cut.
Sleeves – Loose sleeves can pose a
safety hazard when reaching over the stovetop or moving around the
kitchen, getting caught on appliances or knocking over bowls and
containers, creating spills.
Electrical Appliances
Electrical appliances like toasters, crock pots
grills, popcorn machines etc can pose many dangers and should be
treated with respect when working in the kitchen. Electrical
appliances can pose fire hazards as well as burn hazards and
hazards from spills. Here are some safety tips for electrical
appliances:
Always dry hands thoroughly before
unplugging an appliance.
Don’t pull on the cord when
unplugging – use the end that is designed for unplugging.
Keep appliances away from water
sources.
Be sure appliances are placed securely on
the work area before using.
An electrician should repair frayed cords
promptly.
Appliance cords should be kept as short as
possible in order to avoid tripping over the cord or knocking the
appliance over.
Don’t plug too many appliances into
one outlet.
To avoid burns when processing hot liquids
in the blender, be sure the lid is on tightly and cover the lid
with a towel.
Blenders should not be filled over half
full.
Recipes
Always read your recipe through from
beginning to end, to ensure you have everything you need. Even if
doing a simple
beef crock pot recipe it is important to know what you need to
do before you start. This will ensure you are prepared and
therefore less likely to have an accident,
