How To Decorate A Small Home
Written by Bill Brennan
Friday, 01 August 2008

If you live in a small home you can still decorate to make it look wonderful. Small areas can give a cozy feeling and become warm and inviting with the right décor and style. It doesn’t necessarily need to be about the décor that you choose but about the way that you arrange it. Careful planning and attention can help to make the decorating easier.

Here are a few pointers to make decorating a small home easier.

Avoid any over head lighting. Instead you can use lamps at every corner of the room in order to balance the lighting in the room. Using overhead lighting will decrease the feel of the height.

Add ceiling tile or paint the ceiling white so that the room seem brighter

When decorating the walls you need to use smaller pictures so that the pictures do not stand out.

Don’t over do it with furniture and decorations.

When you are decorating your living room it is important to place the sofa on the longest wall of the room. This will make the room seem much larger than usual. Try using a futon couch to have room for guests, save on space and make your home seem neat and organized. You want to be able to visit with your company when they come over so place two chairs facing the couch that match the color of the couch. You may also want to add a throw rug down and a coffee table in the center. Place your television at an angle that it can be watched from any chair.

When possible consider painting the walls a cheerful color but don’t use primary colors. It’s better to use a neutral color or soft tone and decorate with bright colors. This way you can control the amount of bright colors you use.

It’s very important to be very organized when you live in a small home. You can take up every bit of space in your home by utilizing it completely. You don’t need to run out to buy several expensive totes to store things in. Instead use empty coffee cans or milk crates that you can dress up by applying wall paper or contact paper to it. Now is the time to get creative and remember that there is a place for everything.

The rest of the home can be organized to help make each room look neat and tidy. Make or purchase storage units to add to the bathroom for accessories, toilet tissue, paper towels, soaps, shampoos and more.

You can add a small piece of PVC pipe in all the corners to hang up some clothes for easy access. You can also use the PVC pipe rod to create a separation curtain in a bedroom. If you have several pieces of furniture around your home and you don’t know what to do with it, put it to use. Every drawer, shelf or opening can be used to store something. You can make it look great while hiding your stuff.

It’s very important to stay organized to be able to maintain your small home décor.

Written by Steve Samuel
Wednesday, 23 July 2008

All free online diets are more concentrated on losing weight fast rather than obtaining solid results. That’s why those diets don’t provide the best results possible. They might give you the results desired, but they don’t help you keep that weight off. And for most, people who finish a diet end up gaining the weight back.

People like quick results and although most fad diets provide that quickness, they sacrifice the important factors needed to keep weight off. An example diet would be the Atkins Diet. This fad diet utilizes a system of cutting carbs to bring results. And as keep reducing the amount of carbs in your diet, you increase the amount of fat taken in. When you reduce one energy source, you have to get the other energy source from somewhere else. And you get that from your own fat and the increase fat from the foods you eat.

However, you can’t use the fad diets forever. You can’t keep eating a diet loaded with high fats and low carbs. Eventually your body will get use to it and you will start gaining weight back. Your body reacts to change, and when it gets adapted to a diet, you start gaining back weight.

So when you end a diet, you start reverting back to old habits. When that happens, you start gaining back every single pound that you lost. Some even gain more weight than they lost because their diets get worse.

Fad diets like the Atkins Diet don’t work because they don’t fix the problem that caused your weight gain in the first place. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you need to fix your eating habits. Fad diets like the Atkins Diet only make your diets worse. So find the good free online diet plans that fix your eating habits.

Marketing Strategies
Written by Karl Stadler
Sunday, 06 July 2008

Marketing strategy helps organizations to focus their attention to complete resource utilization to increase sales and win over their competitors. Every company applies some kind of marketing strategies to maintain existing customers, attract potential customers and also to maintain and enhance their reputation in the market.

When designing a marketing plan, first a marketing strategy is taken into consideration. The marketing plan consists of steps to be taken so as to attain success in the implementation of the marketing strategy chosen. Big projects involve selection of different strategies at different levels. Usually a strategy consists of well-sketched tactics. They are meant to meet the needs and finally reach marketing objectives. Each of the strategies has pre-calculated results because when a particular strategy is chosen at a particular level, its outcome becomes the goal of that particular level. If there is an absence of a well thought strategy in a marketing plan means it is supposedly lacking a good foundation. A reasonable marketing strategy should not only facilitate marketing goals, but also the action sequence of a campaign.

At regular time intervals the firm should analyze the marketing decision. This is done with the help of strategic models and the 3C’s model is considered for this purpose. To calculate the company’s strategic position, Ansoff matrix is used. The 3C’s model determines the factors, which leads to the success of a marketing campaign. There are three key parties involved in this model the corporation, the customer and the competitors. The involvement of all the three key parties leads to positive results and this involvement is known as the 3C’s or strategic triangle.

The role of the corporation is to increase the strength of the company in the success critical areas, when compared to that of the competitor. The customer and his interest form the basis of any strategy. The competitor also plays a vital part. The competitor-based strategies are based on the functioning of business competitors like design and engineering, sales and servicing, and purchasing.

More and more people are becoming successful online, individuals and corporations. It takes some time and effort to earn money online and of course there is a learning curve. The main point to remember however is that it does not happen overnight and like any business there are risks. The amount of work and risk at the end of the day is up to you but nobody has become rich by doing nothing.

Comparing Investing and Gambling
Written by Steve Samuel
Tuesday, 24 June 2008

Some stock market for beginners contrarians believe that investing in the stock market is just like gambling. And with certain circumstances, they are right. In both cases, you are taking your money and trying to grow it. In both cases, if things don’t go right, you can lose some or all of your money. And in both cases, it takes a great amount of strategy and effort to be successful at it.

However, it ends there. Gambling is gambling and it has nothing to do with investing. Now some professional gamblers out there think of gambling as investing their money only because they can grow their money easily. But there are very few professional gamblers out there as compared to investors. So it’s hard and irresponsible to think investing and gambling are the same.

The major difference with gambling and investing is the idea of luck. Sure there is strategy that goes into both. There are different ways to gamble and different rules to follow however, it’s luck that really separates the two. When it comes down to it, no matter how much you know or how successful you are at gambling, luck is part of how well you do. In gambling, you play the odds and hope that works. Investing, there is no real luck, you either do things the right way or you do things the wrong way. And that makes you either a successful investor or a poor investor.

If you found the information in this article interesting and helpful, please click the link in this paragraph. The site that you’ll visit will provide more information about investing revealing tips and rules that will make you a successful investor. Visit stock market for dummies.

Regular Deadlift vs Romanian Deadlift
Written by Steve Samuel
Saturday, 21 June 2008

For some weightlifters, the deadlift is the most important exercise in their routines and need to include it in all their free weightlifting programs. The deadlift strengthens the lower back, an important muscle that provides support for the lower body. Without it strong, many injuries happen to weightlifters that nag for long periods of time.

The deadlift can be done two basic ways: the regular deadlift or the Romanian deadlift. Although it’s thought to be more dangerous, the regular deadlift is the best way to build and fully strengthen the lower back. This uses the entire lower body and the lower back to lift the weight to target the lower back. Because the legs are needed, a lot of weight is used with this exercise.

The Romanian deadlift is an effective exercise for the lower back but not as effective as the regular deadlift. This exercise is also known as the straight legged deadlift where the legs are not used at all to strengthen the lower back. Because that extra support isn’t there, less weight is used.

It doesn’t matter which exercise you use, one of them must be included in your weightlifting routines. Not strengthening your lower back is foolish and you will learn that the hard way. Don’t continue with this stupidity, include the deadlift in you free weightlifting routines.

How to Join Paid Focus Groups
Written by Rhinanna Miller
Saturday, 10 May 2008

As a stay-at-home mom, I always appreciate getting a chance to make a few extra bucks every once in a while. I can't commit to a regular full- or part-time job, nor do I have the time to run my own business, so good opportunities are rather hard to come by. A few of my friends mentioned that they've participated in paid focus groups as a way to earn some cash every once in a while. I really like this idea, and am currently doing more research into it.

I learned that paid focus groups are a very common way for businesses to get consumer feedback about their products or services. During these meetings, which often take place before the product officially launches, a professional marketer leads a small panel of consumers (who meet specific demographic requirements) through discussions about the product, noting their reactions, suggestions, and recommendations. The consumers on the panel are typically compensated for their participation.

I'm certainly not shy about sharing my opinions with others, so I think paid focus groups would be perfect for me! The only thing I have to do now is find a way to let these companies know that I'm willing to join their consumer panels. But how do I do that?

I did some more checking online, and discovered that there are a couple of ways to get my name out there as an interested party. First, I can register with websites that maintain databases of people willing to participate in paid focus groups. These websites are usually run by private marketing firms that in turn sell their data to companies in need of consumer feedback. So when I register, I have to provide personal information such as age, household size, income, number of children in the home, etc. in order to be placed on appropriate panels.

A second way to join paid focus groups is to keep an eye on the classifieds section of a local newspaper. Many times, larger companies will advertise for panel participants in this manner, so it would be a good idea to check the want ads from time to time.

I know that I'm not going to get rich by joining paid focus groups, but that's not really the goal here. I just want to be able to get out of the house, do something fun, and earn a little extra money for my time.

Carnival Glass: Beautiful And Valuable
Written by Dave Mora
Friday, 07 March 2008

Carnival Glass, originally called Iridescent Ware, first came out in late 1907. It was not commonly referred to as Carnival Glass until the 1950s, though, when collectors started calling it that. These pieces were typically made from extremely ornate glass pieces, characterized by the myriad hues of their sheens. Their luster was achieved by applying metallic salt sprays to the glass before it had completely cooled down.

Carnival glass is an inexpensive pressed glass, made as both functional and ornamental objects, found in a wide spectrum of colors. This glass is sometimes referred to as dope glass by the glass workers because the process of applying the iridescent coloring to the surface is called doping. Its production started in 1907 in many different pieces in over 150 patterns. However, it did not command the prices expected, and was subsequently discounted.

The glass is produced in various translucent colors. Primarily amongst these are amethyst, marigold, cobalt, green, and red. Sometimes it is also made in opaque white which is called milk glass. A semi-transparent or translucent pale-green hue was also available before the widespread knowledge of radiation hazards. this glass was called Vaseline or uranium glass. Both of these contain traces of uranium salts which gives the glass a faint green glow when exposed to UV light.

Millersburg glass Company, Ohio was one of the largest producers of this kind of glass. Though the first glass product of the company were crystal, the Millersburg plant decided to produce iridescent glassware looking to the popularity of it. In this way the Millersburg Company brought out its line of Radium glassware.

The prices of Carnival glass vary widely depending on their quality and availability. This glass is a highly collectible item with some of the pieces worth very little, while other, rarer items command thousands of dollars. There is a very active market for this item since it has become an antique glass collectible.

The identification of the glass of carnival is as an operation much difficult one. Great part of the suppliers has not included the mark of the creator in their product, while the others have made therefore only for the part of the time that have produced the glass. In order to identify this glass, one must bind together the models, colors, splendor, edges, thickness and other factors from catalogue of the old supplier, other known examples, or the other material of reference. From many suppliers the produced near copies of the popular models of theirs available again, identifying it are a challenge also for an expert.

Carnival glass or Iridescent Ware was introduced in 1907 and had a metallic sheen from a spray of salts when hot. This inexpensive pressed glass, also known as dope glass is made for functional/ornamental objects. Due to lack of demand price was discounted. Available colors are primarily amethyst/marigold/cobalt/green/red. Vaseline or uranium glass had uranium salts and hence was discontinued. Millersburg glass Company was the greatest producer of this type of glass. Initially this was made as crystal and later on as iridescent glassware. The prices vary depending on their quality/availability. This is antique glass collectible and has market. Identification of this glass is based on patterns/colors/sheen/edges/thickness etc.

Carnival Glass Bowls An Overnight Hit
Written by Carrie Lammond
Thursday, 06 March 2008

Carnival glass originated in the early 1900s, and production waned in the mid to late thirties. The bowls of carnival glass are part of a larger collection of collectable items known as carnival glass. Carnival glass is coated with iridescent, giving it an oil-like sheen and this glass is inexpensive. This process is known as doping and hence many leading glass manufacturers call it "dope glass".

The company Fenton was the first and largest, widely recognized carnival glass producer. Fenton initially began life as a company which decorated blank glass produced by other companies. In 1907 it started creating carnival glass. When production started, Fenton glassware was marketed as "Iridill" or "iridescent ware". This was an instant hit and several other companies began producing and marketing their own carnival glass bowls.

During the Depression in the late 1920s, demand on products began to decrease which impacted to sales reduction and partly dissemination of the market of glass companies. Because of this, some companies started selling merchandise to extremely low prices, which led to closure of business, just to get rid of stocks to carnivals which they use as prizes on games.

Known as "carnival glass" by glass collectors, the popularity of carnival glass bowls surged in the 1950s. Originally used as carnival prizes, today reproductions are made by several companies. Fenton glass in particular is a prized collectible and the most frequently manufactured.

You can find carnival glass for sale at auctions, antique shops and online. Prices vary, with the Fenton antique glass and other well-known producers demanding the higher prices. The more common colors are marigold and dark hues like blue and green. Red or pastel colored carnival glass bowls are the most prized and, therefore, the higer priced pieces. A rare ice-blue plate sold on a popular auction website for $16,327.55!

For the newbie collectors, there are a lot of resources with plenty of information. A lot of web sites and books are out there for information on the many sizes and shapes these antiques are available. There are organizations for would-be enthusiasts too, which is a good method to learn more.

Carnival glass bowls are a highly collectible type of glass. They were produced by covering glass with an iridescent, shiny coating. The largest producer of carnival glass was Fenton. Fenton glassware quickly became popular, and other companies started producing carnival glass as well. Due to market saturation and the Great Depression, demand for carnival glass declined sharply in the late 1920s. Today, antique Fenton glass in particular is sought after by collectors, with red and pastel colored pieces considered the most valuable. Many resources are available for those new to collecting, such as websites and books with information on the various types of carnival glass.

Rare Baseball Cards - Build A Collection, Cash In
Written by Dan Silver
Friday, 29 February 2008

It's well known that many people enjoy the hobby of collecting baseball cards. Those who are collectors will say that there's nothing more exciting than finding a good card that they haven't yet acquired for their collection. The cards that collectors most often seek for their collections are the rare or vintage cards, and as a result, these cards have a much higher monetary value.

Most of the old baseball cards are re-productions but a few are still made from the original material. Now these cards are quite valuable as there are only a few of these cards ever seen in public. A few baseball cards can mean approximately 100 or less. The price of these cards is usually based on the availability and of course the condition of the card within the market.

Some of the most rare baseball cards are from the players that we all know quite well. Players like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and even Honus Wagner have all had fabulous careers in the world of baseball. Baseball cards for these players were collectible even when they were still playing.

Many rare baseball cards show wear on their edges and corners, and some even have creases on the card itself. Much of this wear is caused by the thin and inferior quality cardboard that companies used to print cards for certain players. Another reason for the wear is that many collectors were children who collected the cards simply for the love of the game, and they didn't take measures to keep the cards in mint condition.

There are few rare baseball cards available in any condition, and thus any of these cards, even in severely damaged condition, will cause a great deal of excitement among collectors. There are so many collectors who want to see a T206 Honus Wagner card, for example, and so few of those cards exist. As a result, intense bidding will occur whenever any of these cards is up for sale at a public auction.

The Topps Company's long association with baseball has made it the best-known name in the baseball card market. Its first set of baseball cards, released in 1951, was intended to be used as a game. In 1952, however, Topps produced the set that brought the modern sports trading card to life. Today the 1952 Topps set is one of the most valuable baseball card sets ever produced.

Topps has continued to produce Topps baseball cards sets ever since and today Topps continues to build on its established tradition. Armed with the latest technologies and an unparalleled stable of brands, The Topps Company is leading the charge into the next generation of baseball trading cards.

Wagner and Ruth baseball cards are rare, therefore it is hard to find a collector who is able to offer these. Recently, cards collected from the years 1970-1979 have proven to be of great value and worthy to a collector. Some of the cards from those years that have shown the most profitable are Mike Schmidt, Carlton Fisk, Steve Garvey, and Dusty Baker.

The value of MLB cards from the 1970s has been growing steadily, with many of the best items hovering around or below the 300$ mark. Due to the high growth potential, collectors investing in these items are in a good position to reap significant rewards in the future.

The collection of baseball cards is a popular hobby, for both the personal satisfaction of acquiring a new card, and the occasional luck some people enjoy. Topps baseball cards were first produced in 1951. The second set it produced in 1952 was very popular, and is an example of how valuable rare baseball cards can be today. MLB cards bought in the 1970's are proving today to have been a very good investment. Currently most of them sell for under $300, so they are still a viable investment, as their value should continue to rise as time goes by.

Silver Dollar Coins To Collect And Trade
Written by Mark Garmick
Thursday, 28 February 2008

Many people like to collect silver dollar coins. These days, silver dollars are rare, and finding one can be a rewarding experience for some. Others, of course, will simply spend any dollars they come into contact with, regardless of what kind!

The Morgan dollar coin is a silver dollar minted originally in the late 19th century, with Miss Liberty's face and an eagle on either side. A nickname for the coin is the "buzzard dollar" because of the somewhat gaunt look of the eagle, which looks more like a buzzard. Nonetheless, they are rare coins, as the last was made in 1921, and it's uniqueness makes it a treasure to own.

Some people enjoy trading their coins in order to attain other coins. Collectors may need a particular coin to complete a collection and will often look to other coin collectors to make the trade. To trade dollar coins and ensure an even trade, it is necessary to possess rare coins yourself. Most coin collectors have duplicates of dollar coins that they are willing to trade to help them to complete their collection.

There are many beautiful silver dollar coins. Silver dollars are worth quite a bit more than coins made primarily of copper, and they generally look better. The United States Government issues many commemorative silver dollar coins for limited periods of time, allowing collectors to save these coins and trade them later after they are no longer minted.

A coin is worth more if it is older or less common. For especially rare coins, it does not matter as much whether they are in good condition. Newer coins, however, will see their value fluctuate depending on their condition - the better shape it is in, the more it will be worth. For instance, a Morgan dollar in Brilliant Uncirculated condition is worth a lot because it is both rare and in perfect condition.

Researching silver dollar coins extensively is one of the smartest things you can do if you are thinking about collecting and trading them. Increasing your knowledge about silver dollar coins will enable you to manage your collection of silver dollar coins wisely.

Collecting and trading silver dollar coins is a hobby many people enjoy. Such coins are rare nowadays and finding them may seem special to some. For others, a dollar is a dollar and when a silver coin comes their way, they simply spend it! Morgan silver dollars were placed into circulation in the late 19th century. The production of morgan dollar coins was stopped by the US government in 1921 and are now highly prized collectibles. Collectors usually trade dollar coins and other collectible coins for coins of similar value or mostly just because they want to upgrade their collection.

Tankless Water Heaters Helps To Save Money
Written by Pat Killian
Tuesday, 26 February 2008

Standard water heaters go through a heat and reheat cycle whether or not hot water is required. This causes one to be paying for water to be heated even if it is not necessary at the time.

One cost effective manner to get hot water throughout your house is the Bosch Powerstar device without a reservoir. It works rapidly, and provides almost limitless amounts of water at your desired temperature. Your bills are also lower, as only the water is warmed, not the tank and immediate atmosphere.

A demand water heater only heats water when it's needed. They can help to save money since they don't suffer from standby energy losses. Further, the easily replaceable parts in most tankless water heaters give them lengthy service lifetimes, usually lasting more than 15 years.

In contrast, storage water heaters last for much less years. Periodic water heater maintenance significantly extends water heater's life and minimizes the loss of efficiency. On the working part the Tankless water heaters have an electric, gas, or propane heating device that is activated by the flow of water.

Once activated, the heater provides a constant supply of hot water, and the maximum flow rate at a desired temperature is determined by the capacity of the heater. It is also known that Gas water heaters typically have larger capacities than electric tankless water heaters.

When shopping for a tankless water heater, the dealer should provide a number which corresponds to the maximum amount of outflow while still increasing the water temperature a given amount. Many such devices also include an indicator allowing one to define the water temperature at the spigot. These devices use much less energy than their conventional counterparts, in part because there is no wasted heat when the unit is not in operation.

Tankless water heaters are evaluated by the greatest rate of current at which a preferred temperature is encountered. Water heater features include the ability to set a release temperature. There is also a much higher rate of effectiveness with tankless water heaters as it reduces the possibility of standby losses.

It doesn't make much sense to pay for hot water 24 hours a day when you only use it for a fraction of that time. Traditional water heaters heat and reheat the same water constantly, but tankless water heaters don't heat water until it is needed. Gas operated heaters usually have bigger capacities than electric powered ones. A cost-effective and waste-minimizing way to heat your home is the Bosch Powerstar Tankless water heater, which lasts for at least fifteen years with its original parts. Regular maintenance extends its life significantly. If you are looking to save money and energy, buy Bosch Powerstar tankless heater and you will do just that!

Using Billiard Gloves
Written by Lisa Paterson
Tuesday, 26 February 2008

Gloves can be worn for several different sports and billiards is no exception. There are several different things a person can use to help them shoot a great game of billiards. Some of these things include a customized cue stick, a specific cue stick tip, chalk, talc, or a towel. Another popular product that is used is called the billiard glove. Some people prefer not to use gloves while others think that a game cannot be played without a nice pair of gloves. There are advantages and disadvantages of wearing gloves and it does depend on the shooters preference.

The Advantage of using Billiard Gloves

The main reason to use billiard gloves would be to make the shot as easy and accurate as possible. When wearing a pair of billiard gloves, the pool cue stick can slide back and forth much easier through the bridge hand which makes it easier to make the shot as close to target as possible. If you don’t have enough talc on your hands, when you slide the cue stick back and fourth to prepare for your target you may realize that it can cause friction when the area is not powdered down right. This friction can cause you to not shoot as accurately as you hoped to.

When using billiard gloves, they slide on easily and without any complications. You can wear them throughout the entire game without any problems. The elastic ensures that the glove will become a great fit. It doesn’t matter if you are left or right handed you can find a glove that fits. The standard pool glove covers the thumb, index finger and middle finger. The also have the tips of the fingers exposed in order to get a firm grip on the felt.

You have several choices to choose from when it comes to finding billiard gloves for you. When selecting your pair of gloves you need to keep in mind what you feel would make a good glove. Here are some of your choices.

• A variety of colors to choose from

• A variety of sizes to fit

The Disadvantage of using Billiard Gloves

As with anything, there are disadvantages of using billiard gloves. Most of the time, people will not use the gloves because

• They do not fit comfortable. Usually this is because they purchase the wrong size.

• The elastic material may cause the hand to sweat while wearing the glove

• The glove becomes a distraction

• You cannot find the right hand position when wearing the glove

Some people cannot wear gloves regardless of how hard they try. If you shoot a great game without a glove, maybe you don’t need to purchase one at all.

When looking for a glove, you need to be sure that you can try them on. Ordering billiard gloves online may give you a cheaper price but if you cannot try it on you may buy a size that is too small or too big. Don’t buy a color that will distract you. Most of the time, you can choose the color that you want but if you find red distracting to you, don’t buy it in a glove. Use neutral colors so you can concentrate on your game. Sterling billiard gloves are one of the many brands available.

DVD Portable Players: Choosing The Best
Written by Dean Karr
Monday, 25 February 2008

DVD portable players are great solutions for families taking vacations of any kind, whether they are taking the car or taking the plane. There are a wide range of DVD portable players available on the market, and many have special features that are convenient for any user.

The first thing one considers when choosing between DVD portable players is the size of the screen. A player with a built-in screen is compact and perfect for the road. Usually, larger screens are better, and smaller screens could hurt the eyes after prolonged periods of viewing. Although the players with larger screens can be more cumbersome, the larger screen allows more people to watch and makes for a better viewing experience.

Video and Audio outputs available on DVD players are things to be considered when choosing the product. Checking the availability of the outputs like S-Video, component video and optical output for audio with high quality ensure the best movie experience possible. It is also crucial to check the availability of video outputs if one does not have a built-in screen because of the small size of the player.

With a High Definition Multimedia Interface cable one can get high definition video resolutions and high-quality audio and nowadays a number of DVD players come with HDMI-out. The The latest DVD players have the facility for video and audio output. It is not easy and practicable to find small and portable HDMI DVD players. Home entertainment models of DVD players use HDMI whereas models for the road do not provide this. A few expensive laptops with DVD facility have HDMI-out, but these are not common.

efforts will be noticed by your guests and appreciated while sitting at the table together.

Above all, it is most important to remember that your dinnerware should be shared at the dining table with those you love

Ornamental Glass in the US
Written by Menachem Green
Monday, 18 February 2008

Ornamental and other heirloom glasswares have held countless families spellbound. We are struck at why such skill and artistry seem to be so difficult to fathom. Among the collections that have continually engaged our eyes is carnival glass. Those who think they are too novice or amateurish to get anything will quickly realize the genius in this craftsmanship, considering the iridescence and wide range of colors that these practical ornaments are capable of showing off.

The most popular of the iridescent glass patterns is the fenton carnival glass that reached the height of popularity in the 1900's. Other types of clear glass dinnerware remain a collectible niche to this day. Collectors also remain interested in the product of one of fenton's famous rivals, the northwood glass. The iridescent glass appeared to have a metallic luster and sheen and was very unique in appearance. The pieces were originally sold in dime stores across America, but after sales decreased and popularity waned, and at one time, even got sold in bulk to carnivals.

Why should you cook with Arrowroot Powder
Written by Lisa Paterson
Thursday, 22 November 2007

You may have heard of it but you have never tried Arrowroot powder to cook with. Arrowroot powder has been around since records have been kept on ways to cook. When you cook with arrowroot powder you may find that you like the way you can add a little seasoning to your food. It may not be something that you can use in every dish but it can help make a dish taste great. You may find that using arrowroot is also a healthy choice as well. So what are you waiting for, get cooking with arrowroot powder.

If you need a healthy substitute for cornstarch or flour, arrowroot powder is a good alternative. This tasteless, weightless, white powdery substance comes from the arrowroot plant, grown in tropical places such as the Caribbean, and it is used to thicken foods such as sauces, puddings, desserts, and soups. It has many advantages over thickeners such as cornstarch. Its lack of flavor makes it an ideal addition to many of your favorite foods, because it won’t impair their taste. The substance is also colorless when it becomes a gel, so it will not discolor your dishes, either. Arrowroot powder works especially well with acidic liquids – much better than cornstarch, in fact. The other advantage it has over many other thickeners is that endures freezing well – which makes it an excellent addition to ice cream. A possible downside is that arrowroot powder doesn’t work well with dairy or meat sauces, so it’s best to use other thickeners for those.

One of the many good things about arrowroot powder is that a little goes a long way; you don’t need much of it to get the results you want. Instead of one tablespoon of cornstarch, use two teaspoons of arrowroot powder, and to substitute flour, use one teaspoon for every tablespoon of flour.

It takes less heat to thicken arrowroot powder than most other starches. For this reason, it is best to introduce arrowroot powder slowly to your cooking. It’s a good idea to prepare the powder by combining with some water before adding it to the cooking food. Here is where you need to be careful, because if the temperature is too high, it may not thicken. The best bet is to add the powder when you’re nearly done with cooking, since it thickens quickly.

Arrowroot powder is known for its health benefits. It digests well, so those with stomach disorders can consume it without worrying. Moreover, it does not contain gluten, so it is excellent for those with gluten intolerances. Strict dieters and weight watchers will also benefit from using arrowroot powder, since it is low in calories.

One disadvantage is that arrowroot powder is costlier than cornstarch, and can be challenging to come across. However, many Asian stores and health food stores, such as Whole Foods, carry it. If you can’t find it in stores, though, don’t worry: you can always order online from the companies that produce it, such as Bob’s Red Mill, The Spice House, or Pendery’s.

History of the TV dinner
Written by Lisa Paterson
Thursday, 22 November 2007

Eating TV dinners as everyone watched their favorite show on television is something that kids didn’t get to do very often. It was only when mom had worked that day or had too many other chores to do that she didn’t have time to stay in the kitchen to prepare a full dinner for everyone that night. But no one minded the change every once in a while. It was exciting to eat prepared food in aluminum trays that separated each food. The good ole days… Now TV dinners have changed and some would argue for the better.

The TV dinner has been referred to by many names other than just simply TV dinner. It’s also been called a frozen dinner or microwave meal or ready meal as a rule. Some people tend to like the convenience of preparing a meal in a very easy way and TV dinners give them this option. This is why they are still so popular today after all these years.

History of the TV dinner began over fifty years ago, when it was created unexpectedly as an answer to the turkey question. This wasn’t leftovers either from a big holiday dinner at Thanksgiving. It was more like what was to be done with 520,000 pounds of turkeys that were unsold and traveling back and forth in ten refrigerated box cars across the country.

C.A. Swanson & Sons, which is an Omaha, Nebraska, frozen food company, had to come up with a solution right away to handle the turkey dilemma. They had 520,000 pounds of fresh poultry that they had to get rid of somehow? But what was the answer? Swanson execs needed a brain child in a hurry. It was a man named Gerry Thomas, who was a company salesman that came up with the idea for how to deal with the turkey question. What was this breakthrough concept?

Thomas designed a unique aluminum tray with three separate compartments. He originally got the idea for this tray from the single compartment aluminum trays that were used to keep food hot by Pan American Airways.

Gerald Thomas put together a special turkey dinner inside of his designed tray and introduced it to the Swanson brothers. He also pitched something that would prove to be the start of a new craze. How’s about these dinners be connected with television? Since television was way popular and new to America too. The Swanson brothers accepted the new idea and 5,000 meals were produced for the first year. These first TV dinners sold for 98 cents each and contained turkey, cornbread dressing, buttered peas and sweet potatoes. Many were skeptical that that this food item would catch on.

It more than caught on in the United States. The sales of these TV dinners far exceeded the 5,000 thousand that were made, and in the first year, Swanson sold more than ten million of them. Thus the legendary TV dinner was born and soon became an American institution!

We make our own frozen dinners by making a huge crock pot full of stew and then freezing in meal size portions. These crock pot chicken recipes are a good place to start.

What You Are Likely To Find In Any Mexican Pantry
Tuesday, 20 November 2007

Mexican cuisine is the perfect blend of ancient Mayan and Aztec staples including beans, corn, chile peppers and tomatoes with newer ingredients such as spices, herbs, wheat and dairy foods, which were introduced by the Spanish conquerors. Despite new introductions over the years, authentic Mexican cuisine has stayed true to its ancient techniques and ingredients, which cannot be replaced or substituted.

Here’s what you are likely to find in any authentic Mexican pantry.

Corn: Called nixtamal, which means ‘Gift of the Gods’, Maize is the mainstay of Mexican cuisine and appears in almost every dish from tortillas, enchiladas and tamales to tacos, soups, stews and even desserts.

Rice: As important as corn in Mexican cuisine, rice or arroz is the base of many Mexican dishes. Arroz con pollo, a rice-based chicken casserole is among the most popular and widely recognized of Mexican dishes around the world.

Dried Beans: Called Frijoles in Mexico, dried beans are another Mexican staple. They can be eaten any time of the day either as the main dish or as an accompaniment to the main dish. Frijoles are often prepared simply by simmering in water with fresh native herbs such as epazote.

Tortillas: Prepared by turning corn or wheat flour into a dough, which is then shaped into tiny, very thin cakes. Tortillas are versatile and can be deep-fried as chimichangas; filled, rolled and baked as enchiladas or eaten like tacos stuffed with meats, beans and rice.

Chile peppers: Mexican cuisine incorporates sixty different varieties of chile peppers from the fiery-hot habañeros to the mild-tasting Anaheims. Smoked and dried jalapeños, known as chipotle, provide the distinctive flavor of the adobo sauce whereas stuffed poblano chilies are used in Chiles Rellenos, a popular Mexican main course.

Avocado: Sliced avocados add extra flavor to many soups whereas mashed avocados are the main ingredient in guacamole. Even the leaves of the avocado plant find use in several Mexican dishes.

Tomatoes: Used in fresh as well as cooked salsas and in a variety of stews and rice dishes, tomatoes are a favorite addition to several Mexican dishes.

Tomatillo: Also called husk tomatoes because of the thin husk covering, boiled or roasted tomatillos impart a tart taste to salsas and fish or meat dishes.

Jicama: A root vegetable, with a crisp texture similar to raw potato, Jicama has a mild, slightly sweet flavor and can be eaten boiled, steamed, baked or fried. It can also be eaten raw in salads.

Cilantro: Fresh cilantro, which is the green leaves of the coriander plant, is a must in every salsa. When used in cooked dishes, it is added just before serving as it tends to lose its flavor if cooked too long.

Chayote Squash: This pale green, mild-flavored squash can be eaten raw, fried, pickled or stuffed.

Garlic: Garlic adds a distinctive flavor to marinades, soups and sauces and is used to flavor almost every Mexican dish.

Citrus: Introduced to the Mexicans by the Spanish conquerors, bitter Seville oranges, limes and lemons are integral to several Mexican dishes from tortilla soups to salsas and ceviches. Small Mexican limes are used to give corn and meat dishes a zing that would have been otherwise missing.

Even if you don't have Mexican ingredients you can create a Mexican feel with these Mexican cupcake toppers from our edible cake topper range.
