As a stay-at-home mom, I always appreciate
getting a chance to make a few extra bucks every once in a while. I
can't commit to a regular full- or part-time job, nor do I have
the time to run my own business, so good opportunities are rather
hard to come by. A few of my friends mentioned that they've
participated in paid focus groups as a way to earn some cash every
once in a while. I really like this idea, and am currently doing
more research into it.
I learned that paid focus groups are a
very common way for businesses to get consumer feedback about their
products or services. During these meetings, which often take place
before the product officially launches, a professional marketer
leads a small panel of consumers (who meet specific demographic
requirements) through discussions about the product, noting their
reactions, suggestions, and recommendations. The consumers on the
panel are typically compensated for their participation.
I'm certainly not shy about sharing my
opinions with others, so I think paid focus groups would be perfect
for me! The only thing I have to do now is find a way to let these
companies know that I'm willing to join their consumer panels. But
how do I do that?
I did some more checking online, and
discovered that there are a couple of ways to get my name out there
as an interested party. First, I can register with websites that
maintain databases of people willing to participate in paid focus
groups. These websites are usually run by private marketing firms
that in turn sell their data to companies in need of consumer
feedback. So when I register, I have to provide personal
information such as age, household size, income, number of children
in the home, etc. in order to be placed on appropriate panels.
A second way to join paid focus groups is
to keep an eye on the classifieds section of a local newspaper.
Many times, larger companies will advertise for panel participants
in this manner, so it would be a good idea to check the want ads
from time to time.
I know that I'm not going to get rich by
joining paid focus groups, but that's not really the goal here. I
just want to be able to get out of the house, do something fun, and
earn a little extra money for my time. |

Carnival Glass, originally called
Iridescent Ware, first came out in late 1907. It was not commonly
referred to as Carnival Glass until the 1950s, though, when
collectors started calling it that. These pieces were typically
made from extremely ornate glass pieces, characterized by the
myriad hues of their sheens. Their luster was achieved by applying
metallic salt sprays to the glass before it had completely cooled
down.
Carnival glass is an inexpensive pressed
glass, made as both functional and ornamental objects, found in a
wide spectrum of colors. This glass is sometimes referred to as
dope glass by the glass workers because the process of applying the
iridescent coloring to the surface is called doping. Its production
started in 1907 in many different pieces in over 150 patterns.
However, it did not command the prices expected, and was
subsequently discounted.
The glass is produced in various
translucent colors. Primarily amongst these are amethyst, marigold,
cobalt, green, and red. Sometimes it is also made in opaque white
which is called milk glass. A semi-transparent or translucent
pale-green hue was also available before the widespread knowledge
of radiation hazards. this glass was called Vaseline or uranium
glass. Both of these contain traces of uranium salts which gives
the glass a faint green glow when exposed to UV light.
Millersburg glass Company, Ohio was one of
the largest producers of this kind of glass. Though the first glass
product of the company were crystal, the Millersburg plant decided
to produce iridescent glassware looking to the popularity of it. In
this way the Millersburg Company brought out its line of Radium
glassware.
The prices of Carnival glass vary widely
depending on their quality and availability. This glass is a highly
collectible item with some of the pieces worth very little, while
other, rarer items command thousands of dollars. There is a very
active market for this item since it has become an antique glass
collectible.
The identification of the glass of
carnival is as an operation much difficult one. Great part of the
suppliers has not included the mark of the creator in their
product, while the others have made therefore only for the part of
the time that have produced the glass. In order to identify this
glass, one must bind together the models, colors, splendor, edges,
thickness and other factors from catalogue of the old supplier,
other known examples, or the other material of reference. From many
suppliers the produced near copies of the popular models of theirs
available again, identifying it are a challenge also for an
expert.
Carnival glass or
Iridescent Ware was introduced in 1907 and had a metallic sheen
from a spray of salts when hot. This inexpensive pressed glass,
also known as dope glass is made for functional/ornamental objects.
Due to lack of demand price was discounted. Available colors are
primarily amethyst/marigold/cobalt/green/red. Vaseline or uranium
glass had uranium salts and hence was discontinued. Millersburg
glass Company was the greatest producer of this type of glass.
Initially this was made as crystal and later on as iridescent
glassware. The prices vary depending on their quality/availability.
This is antique glass collectible and has market. Identification of
this glass is based on patterns/colors/sheen/edges/thickness
etc. |

Carnival glass originated in the early
1900s, and production waned in the mid to late thirties. The bowls
of carnival glass are part of a larger collection of collectable
items known as carnival glass. Carnival glass is coated with
iridescent, giving it an oil-like sheen and this glass is
inexpensive. This process is known as doping and hence many leading
glass manufacturers call it "dope glass".
The company Fenton was the first and
largest, widely recognized carnival glass producer. Fenton
initially began life as a company which decorated blank glass
produced by other companies. In 1907 it started creating carnival
glass. When production started, Fenton glassware was marketed as
"Iridill" or "iridescent ware". This was an instant hit and several
other companies began producing and marketing their own carnival
glass bowls.
During the Depression in the late 1920s,
demand on products began to decrease which impacted to sales
reduction and partly dissemination of the market of glass
companies. Because of this, some companies started selling
merchandise to extremely low prices, which led to closure of
business, just to get rid of stocks to carnivals which they use as
prizes on games.
Known as "carnival glass" by glass
collectors, the popularity of carnival glass bowls surged in the
1950s. Originally used as carnival prizes, today reproductions are
made by several companies. Fenton glass in particular is a prized
collectible and the most frequently manufactured.
You can find carnival glass for sale at
auctions, antique shops and online. Prices vary, with the Fenton
antique glass and other well-known producers demanding the higher
prices. The more common colors are marigold and dark hues like blue
and green. Red or pastel colored carnival glass bowls are the most
prized and, therefore, the higer priced pieces. A rare ice-blue
plate sold on a popular auction website for $16,327.55!
For the newbie collectors, there are a lot
of resources with plenty of information. A lot of web sites and
books are out there for information on the many sizes and shapes
these antiques are available. There are organizations for would-be
enthusiasts too, which is a good method to learn more.
Carnival glass
bowls are a highly collectible type of glass. They were produced by
covering glass with an iridescent, shiny coating. The largest
producer of carnival glass was Fenton. Fenton glassware quickly
became popular, and other companies started producing carnival
glass as well. Due to market saturation and the Great Depression,
demand for carnival glass declined sharply in the late 1920s.
Today, antique Fenton glass in particular is sought after by
collectors, with red and pastel colored pieces considered the most
valuable. Many resources are available for those new to collecting,
such as websites and books with information on the various types of
carnival glass. |

It's well known that many people enjoy
the hobby of collecting baseball cards. Those who are collectors
will say that there's nothing more exciting than finding a good
card that they haven't yet acquired for their collection. The
cards that collectors most often seek for their collections are the
rare or vintage cards, and as a result, these cards have a much
higher monetary value.
Most of the old baseball cards are
re-productions but a few are still made from the original material.
Now these cards are quite valuable as there are only a few of these
cards ever seen in public. A few baseball cards can mean
approximately 100 or less. The price of these cards is usually
based on the availability and of course the condition of the card
within the market.
Some of the most rare baseball cards are
from the players that we all know quite well. Players like Babe
Ruth, Mickey Mantle and even Honus Wagner have all had fabulous
careers in the world of baseball. Baseball cards for these players
were collectible even when they were still playing.
Many rare baseball cards show wear on
their edges and corners, and some even have creases on the card
itself. Much of this wear is caused by the thin and inferior
quality cardboard that companies used to print cards for certain
players. Another reason for the wear is that many collectors were
children who collected the cards simply for the love of the game,
and they didn't take measures to keep the cards in mint
condition.
There are few rare baseball cards
available in any condition, and thus any of these cards, even in
severely damaged condition, will cause a great deal of excitement
among collectors. There are so many collectors who want to see a
T206 Honus Wagner card, for example, and so few of those cards
exist. As a result, intense bidding will occur whenever any of
these cards is up for sale at a public auction.
The Topps Company's long association with
baseball has made it the best-known name in the baseball card
market. Its first set of baseball cards, released in 1951, was
intended to be used as a game. In 1952, however, Topps produced the
set that brought the modern sports trading card to life. Today the
1952 Topps set is one of the most valuable baseball card sets ever
produced.
Topps has continued to produce Topps
baseball cards sets ever since and today Topps continues to build
on its established tradition. Armed with the latest technologies
and an unparalleled stable of brands, The Topps Company is leading
the charge into the next generation of baseball trading cards.
Wagner and Ruth baseball cards are rare,
therefore it is hard to find a collector who is able to offer
these. Recently, cards collected from the years 1970-1979 have
proven to be of great value and worthy to a collector. Some of the
cards from those years that have shown the most profitable are Mike
Schmidt, Carlton Fisk, Steve Garvey, and Dusty Baker.
The value of MLB cards from the 1970s has
been growing steadily, with many of the best items hovering around
or below the 300$ mark. Due to the high growth potential,
collectors investing in these items are in a good position to reap
significant rewards in the future.
The collection of baseball
cards is a popular hobby, for both the personal satisfaction of
acquiring a new card, and the occasional luck some people enjoy.
Topps baseball cards were first produced in 1951. The second set it
produced in 1952 was very popular, and is an example of how
valuable rare baseball cards can be today. MLB cards bought in the
1970's are proving today to have been a very good investment.
Currently most of them sell for under $300, so they are still a
viable investment, as their value should continue to rise as time
goes by. |

Few things in life are as pleasantly
welcomed as a back massage. Paying for a massage in a spa or at a
gym can be quite an investment, so often it's worthwhile to simply
spend the money instead on your own personal back massager, and
you'll have hours of relaxing, at-home massages. Obviously not as
thorough as a professional massage therapist, a handheld back
massager or massaging chair can still help work out the kinks in
your back, improve your mood, and help eliminate stress from your
life.
A small back massager that you can hold in
your hand can be easily used to work knots out of your muscles.
They are available at numerous stores cheaply, and require just a
few batteries to start working, by the vibration of their rubber
nodules. Some models add heat for additional penetration into
larger muscle groups like the back and upper legs.
Find a kink or a knot it your back, press
the back massager into it while it's vibrating and it will be gone
in a few minutes. You can use them on your back, your feet, your
legs...anywhere you can reach. Ask a loved one to help out in those
difficult-to-reach places and it truly becomes a relaxing day.
An alternative option is to utilize the
massaging chair for your back and legs. A full body massage chair
is built with a group of rollers implanted inside the chair's
back, which roll up and down your spine. It also has firm rubber
knobs to put pressure on specifics areas of your back. Some are
even built with a calf and foot massager attachment specifically
designed for your legs.
Massaging chairs usually have a variety of
built-in massage profiles that can give you just the right massage
for your needs. They may have programs to target specific areas of
your body, to calmly relax you to sleep, or even to rigorously wake
you from sleep. Some even allow you to program your own profile -
the ultimate customized massage!
A great addition to your home to lift your
spirits and improve the way you feel physicaly is a back massager.
It is easy to find an inexpensive model for sale; they are great
presents for holidays or birthdays. Other options are the more
expensive massaging chairs, designed for a deep massage to your
back. Either option is a great investment that you will enjoy for a
long time!
Expensive massages at spas or gyms are not
viable options for most of us on a regular basis, so why not just
invest the money in your own back massager Such a
device is not only for the back, but any muscle it can reach, even
a calf and foot massager. There are several choices available to
you when purchasing a full body massage chair. There are different
settings and programs on massage chairs to account for different
types of massage. Try different types and decide what's best for
you in the long time. |

Many people like to collect silver dollar
coins. These days, silver dollars are rare, and finding one can be
a rewarding experience for some. Others, of course, will simply
spend any dollars they come into contact with, regardless of what
kind!
The Morgan dollar coin is a silver dollar
minted originally in the late 19th century, with Miss Liberty's
face and an eagle on either side. A nickname for the coin is the
"buzzard dollar" because of the somewhat gaunt look of the eagle,
which looks more like a buzzard. Nonetheless, they are rare coins,
as the last was made in 1921, and it's uniqueness makes it a
treasure to own.
Some people enjoy trading their coins in
order to attain other coins. Collectors may need a particular coin
to complete a collection and will often look to other coin
collectors to make the trade. To trade dollar coins and ensure an
even trade, it is necessary to possess rare coins yourself. Most
coin collectors have duplicates of dollar coins that they are
willing to trade to help them to complete their collection.
There are many beautiful silver dollar
coins. Silver dollars are worth quite a bit more than coins made
primarily of copper, and they generally look better. The United
States Government issues many commemorative silver dollar coins for
limited periods of time, allowing collectors to save these coins
and trade them later after they are no longer minted.
A coin is worth more if it is older or
less common. For especially rare coins, it does not matter as much
whether they are in good condition. Newer coins, however, will see
their value fluctuate depending on their condition - the better
shape it is in, the more it will be worth. For instance, a Morgan
dollar in Brilliant Uncirculated condition is worth a lot because
it is both rare and in perfect condition.
Researching silver dollar coins
extensively is one of the smartest things you can do if you are
thinking about collecting and trading them. Increasing your
knowledge about silver dollar coins will enable you to manage your
collection of silver dollar coins wisely.
Collecting and trading silver dollar
coins is a hobby many people enjoy. Such coins are rare
nowadays and finding them may seem special to some. For others, a
dollar is a dollar and when a silver coin comes their way, they
simply spend it! Morgan silver dollars were placed into circulation
in the late 19th century. The production of morgan dollar coins was
stopped by the US government in 1921 and are now highly prized
collectibles. Collectors usually trade dollar coins and other
collectible coins for coins of similar value or mostly just because
they want to upgrade their collection. |

Standard water heaters go through a heat
and reheat cycle whether or not hot water is required. This causes
one to be paying for water to be heated even if it is not necessary
at the time.
One cost effective manner to get hot water
throughout your house is the Bosch Powerstar device without a
reservoir. It works rapidly, and provides almost limitless amounts
of water at your desired temperature. Your bills are also lower, as
only the water is warmed, not the tank and immediate
atmosphere.
A demand water heater only heats water
when it's needed. They can help to save money since they don't
suffer from standby energy losses. Further, the easily replaceable
parts in most tankless water heaters give them lengthy service
lifetimes, usually lasting more than 15 years.
In contrast, storage water heaters last
for much less years. Periodic water heater maintenance
significantly extends water heater's life and minimizes the loss
of efficiency. On the working part the Tankless water heaters have
an electric, gas, or propane heating device that is activated by
the flow of water.
Once activated, the heater provides a
constant supply of hot water, and the maximum flow rate at a
desired temperature is determined by the capacity of the heater. It
is also known that Gas water heaters typically have larger
capacities than electric tankless water heaters.
When shopping for a tankless water heater,
the dealer should provide a number which corresponds to the maximum
amount of outflow while still increasing the water temperature a
given amount. Many such devices also include an indicator allowing
one to define the water temperature at the spigot. These devices
use much less energy than their conventional counterparts, in part
because there is no wasted heat when the unit is not in
operation.
Tankless water heaters are
evaluated by the greatest rate of current at which a preferred
temperature is encountered. Water heater features include the
ability to set a release temperature. There is also a much higher
rate of effectiveness with tankless water heaters as it reduces the
possibility of standby losses.
It doesn't make much sense to pay for hot
water 24 hours a day when you only use it for a fraction of that
time. Traditional water heaters heat and reheat the same water
constantly, but tankless water heaters don't heat water until it
is needed. Gas operated heaters usually have bigger capacities than
electric powered ones. A cost-effective and waste-minimizing way to
heat your home is the Bosch Powerstar Tankless water heater, which
lasts for at least fifteen years with its original parts. Regular
maintenance extends its life significantly. If you are looking to
save money and energy, buy Bosch Powerstar tankless heater and you
will do just that! |

Gloves can be worn for several different
sports and billiards is no exception. There are several different
things a person can use to help them shoot a great game of billiards. Some of these things include a
customized cue stick, a specific cue stick tip, chalk, talc, or a
towel. Another popular product that is used is called the billiard
glove. Some people prefer not to use gloves while others think that
a game cannot be played without a nice pair of gloves. There are
advantages and disadvantages of wearing gloves and it does depend
on the shooters preference.
The Advantage of using Billiard
Gloves
The main reason to use billiard gloves
would be to make the shot as easy and accurate as possible. When
wearing a pair of billiard gloves, the pool cue stick can slide
back and forth much easier through the bridge hand which makes it
easier to make the shot as close to target as possible. If you
don’t have enough talc on your hands, when you slide the cue
stick back and fourth to prepare for your target you may realize
that it can cause friction when the area is not powdered down
right. This friction can cause you to not shoot as accurately as
you hoped to.
When using billiard gloves, they slide on
easily and without any complications. You can wear them throughout
the entire game without any problems. The elastic ensures that the
glove will become a great fit. It doesn’t matter if you are
left or right handed you can find a glove that fits. The standard
pool glove covers the thumb, index finger and middle finger. The
also have the tips of the fingers exposed in order to get a firm
grip on the felt.
You have several choices to choose from
when it comes to finding billiard gloves for you. When selecting
your pair of gloves you need to keep in mind what you feel would
make a good glove. Here are some of your choices.
• A variety of colors to choose
from
• A variety of sizes to fit
The Disadvantage of using Billiard
Gloves
As with anything, there are disadvantages
of using billiard gloves. Most of the time, people will not use the
gloves because
• They do not fit comfortable.
Usually this is because they purchase the wrong size.
• The elastic material may cause the
hand to sweat while wearing the glove
• The glove becomes a distraction
• You cannot find the right hand
position when wearing the glove
Some people cannot wear gloves regardless
of how hard they try. If you shoot a great game without a glove,
maybe you don’t need to purchase one at all.
When looking for a glove, you need to be
sure that you can try them on. Ordering billiard gloves online may
give you a cheaper price but if you cannot try it on you may buy a
size that is too small or too big. Don’t buy a color that
will distract you. Most of the time, you can choose the color that
you want but if you find red distracting to you, don’t buy it
in a glove. Use neutral colors so you can concentrate on your game.
Sterling billiard gloves are one of the many brands available. |

DVD portable players are great solutions
for families taking vacations of any kind, whether they are taking
the car or taking the plane. There are a wide range of DVD portable
players available on the market, and many have special features
that are convenient for any user.
The first thing one considers when
choosing between DVD portable players is the size of the screen. A
player with a built-in screen is compact and perfect for the road.
Usually, larger screens are better, and smaller screens could hurt
the eyes after prolonged periods of viewing. Although the players
with larger screens can be more cumbersome, the larger screen
allows more people to watch and makes for a better viewing
experience.
Video and Audio outputs available on DVD
players are things to be considered when choosing the product.
Checking the availability of the outputs like S-Video, component
video and optical output for audio with high quality ensure the
best movie experience possible. It is also crucial to check the
availability of video outputs if one does not have a built-in
screen because of the small size of the player.
With a High Definition Multimedia
Interface cable one can get high definition video resolutions and
high-quality audio and nowadays a number of DVD players come with
HDMI-out. The The latest DVD players have the facility for video
and audio output. It is not easy and practicable to find small and
portable HDMI DVD players. Home entertainment models of DVD players
use HDMI whereas models for the road do not provide this. A few
expensive laptops with DVD facility have HDMI-out, but these are
not common. |

Ruby glass dinnerware generate a stunning
presentation, rivaled by very few other china types. Their elegant,
crisp
coloration and rainbow shine reflect light
in a truly remarkable way. A dinner furnished with this glassware
is a hard thing
to forget.
In case you have guests for dinner that
you would like to impress, use ruby glass dinnerware that invokes a
sense of
royalty/sophistication and your guests are
sure to notice this. In case you select a china set that features
dishes and
beverage ware and is entirely ruby colored
or uniquely accented with crimson touches, the dinnerware will
enhance your menu.
While ruby glass dinnerware
is extremely exquisite, it is very easy and convenient to replace a
piece should the need arise.
For instance, if a guest accidentally
breaks a carnival glass tumbler, many retailers can quickly replace
the piece from
their on-site inventory. It is important
that replacement options are available to ensure the continued
beauty of your
collection, and ruby dinnerware sets are
unique and breathtaking without remaining too rare.
Ruby glass dinnerware collections have
become popular and are often the highlight of your table settings,
but many hosts add
a creative touch by accenting the settings
with pieces from their green glass dinnerware. Ruby glass lends
itself to being
complemented with other glass dinnerware,
and allows you to provide a theme to special occasions. One example
is using blue
accents to help celebrate the American
Fourth of July Holiday.
During the winter holiday of Christmas,
this design is more effective and welcoming. When you showcase the
sparkling glass
with glowing candles and a crackling fire
the traditional red and green motif gets an appreciated update.
Your decorating
efforts will be noticed by your guests and
appreciated while sitting at the table together.
Above all, it is most important to
remember that your dinnerware should be shared at the dining table
with those you love
most. Many owners are careful to keep
their china collections hidden away, so as not to chip or break the
individual pieces,
but remember that the entire point of
purchasing a beautiful and timeless ruby glass dinnerware set is to
use it to create
lasting memories.
The rich, stunning look of ruby glass
dinnerware is unparalleled. However, ruby glass is not only
beautiful, it is also easy
to find. Even if a guest breaks a carnival
glass tumbler, you can quickly obtain a replacement piece. You
can also accent
your ruby glass with other pieces, such as
green glass dinnerware. This provides a particularly pleasing
effect for Christmas
celebrations, as the traditional red and
green looks especially festive when combined with a crackling fire.
Since the whole
reason for having fine dinnerware is to
create lasting memories, don't hide it away in your china cabinet.
Instead, share it
with your loved ones for special
occasions. |

Ornamental and other heirloom glasswares
have held countless families spellbound. We are struck at why such
skill and artistry seem to be so difficult to fathom. Among the
collections that have continually engaged our eyes is carnival
glass. Those who think they are too novice or amateurish to get
anything will quickly realize the genius in this craftsmanship,
considering the iridescence and wide range of colors that these
practical ornaments are capable of showing off.
The most popular of the iridescent glass
patterns is the fenton carnival glass that reached the height of
popularity in the 1900's. Other types of clear glass dinnerware
remain a collectible niche to this day. Collectors also remain
interested in the product of one of fenton's famous rivals, the
northwood glass. The iridescent glass appeared to have a metallic
luster and sheen and was very unique in appearance. The pieces were
originally sold in dime stores across America, but after sales
decreased and popularity waned, and at one time, even got sold in
bulk to carnivals.

You may have heard of it but you have
never tried Arrowroot powder to cook with. Arrowroot powder has
been around since records have been kept on ways to cook. When you
cook with arrowroot powder you may find that you like the way you
can add a little seasoning to your food. It may not be something
that you can use in every dish but it can help make a dish taste
great. You may find that using arrowroot is also a healthy choice
as well. So what are you waiting for, get cooking with arrowroot
powder.
If you need a healthy substitute for
cornstarch or flour, arrowroot powder is a good alternative. This
tasteless, weightless, white powdery substance comes from the
arrowroot plant, grown in tropical places such as the Caribbean,
and it is used to thicken foods such as sauces, puddings, desserts,
and soups. It has many advantages over thickeners such as
cornstarch. Its lack of flavor makes it an ideal addition to many
of your favorite foods, because it won’t impair their taste.
The substance is also colorless when it becomes a gel, so it will
not discolor your dishes, either. Arrowroot powder works especially
well with acidic liquids – much better than cornstarch, in
fact. The other advantage it has over many other thickeners is that
endures freezing well – which makes it an excellent addition
to ice cream. A possible downside is that arrowroot powder
doesn’t work well with dairy or meat sauces, so it’s
best to use other thickeners for those.
One of the many good things about
arrowroot powder is that a little goes a long way; you don’t
need much of it to get the results you want. Instead of one
tablespoon of cornstarch, use two teaspoons of arrowroot powder,
and to substitute flour, use one teaspoon for every tablespoon of
flour.
It takes less heat to thicken arrowroot
powder than most other starches. For this reason, it is best to
introduce arrowroot powder slowly to your cooking. It’s a
good idea to prepare the powder by combining with some water before
adding it to the cooking food. Here is where you need to be
careful, because if the temperature is too high, it may not
thicken. The best bet is to add the powder when you’re nearly
done with cooking, since it thickens quickly.
Arrowroot powder is known for its health
benefits. It digests well, so those with stomach disorders can
consume it without worrying. Moreover, it does not contain gluten,
so it is excellent for those with gluten intolerances. Strict
dieters and weight watchers will also benefit from using arrowroot
powder, since it is low in calories.
One disadvantage is that arrowroot powder
is costlier than cornstarch, and can be challenging to come across.
However, many Asian stores and health food stores, such as Whole
Foods, carry it. If you can’t find it in stores, though,
don’t worry: you can always order online from the companies
that produce it, such as Bob’s Red Mill, The Spice House, or
Pendery’s.

Eating TV dinners as everyone watched
their favorite show on television is something that kids
didn’t get to do very often. It was only when mom had worked
that day or had too many other chores to do that she didn’t
have time to stay in the kitchen to prepare a full dinner for
everyone that night. But no one minded the change every once in a
while. It was exciting to eat prepared food in aluminum trays that
separated each food. The good ole days… Now TV dinners have
changed and some would argue for the better.
The TV dinner has been referred to by many
names other than just simply TV dinner. It’s also been called
a frozen dinner or microwave meal or ready meal as a rule. Some
people tend to like the convenience of preparing a meal in a very
easy way and TV dinners give them this option. This is why they are
still so popular today after all these years.
History of the TV dinner began over fifty
years ago, when it was created unexpectedly as an answer to the
turkey question. This wasn’t leftovers either from a big
holiday dinner at Thanksgiving. It was more like what was to be
done with 520,000 pounds of turkeys that were unsold and traveling
back and forth in ten refrigerated box cars across the country.
C.A. Swanson & Sons, which is an
Omaha, Nebraska, frozen food company, had to come up with a
solution right away to handle the turkey dilemma. They had 520,000
pounds of fresh poultry that they had to get rid of somehow? But
what was the answer? Swanson execs needed a brain child in a hurry.
It was a man named Gerry Thomas, who was a company salesman that
came up with the idea for how to deal with the turkey question.
What was this breakthrough concept?
Thomas designed a unique aluminum tray
with three separate compartments. He originally got the idea for
this tray from the single compartment aluminum trays that were used
to keep food hot by Pan American Airways.
Gerald Thomas put together a special
turkey dinner inside of his designed tray and introduced it to the
Swanson brothers. He also pitched something that would prove to be
the start of a new craze. How’s about these dinners be
connected with television? Since television was way popular and new
to America too. The Swanson brothers accepted the new idea and
5,000 meals were produced for the first year. These first TV
dinners sold for 98 cents each and contained turkey, cornbread
dressing, buttered peas and sweet potatoes. Many were skeptical
that that this food item would catch on.
It more than caught on in the United
States. The sales of these TV dinners far exceeded the 5,000
thousand that were made, and in the first year, Swanson sold more
than ten million of them. Thus the legendary TV dinner was born and
soon became an American institution!
We make our own frozen dinners by making a
huge crock
pot full of stew and then freezing in meal size portions. These
crock
pot chicken recipes are a good place to start. |

Mexican cuisine is the perfect blend of
ancient Mayan and Aztec staples including beans, corn, chile
peppers and tomatoes with newer ingredients such as spices, herbs,
wheat and dairy foods, which were introduced by the Spanish
conquerors. Despite new introductions over the years, authentic
Mexican cuisine has stayed true to its ancient techniques and
ingredients, which cannot be replaced or substituted.
Here’s what you are likely to find
in any authentic Mexican pantry.
Corn: Called nixtamal, which means
‘Gift of the Gods’, Maize is the mainstay of Mexican
cuisine and appears in almost every dish from tortillas, enchiladas
and tamales to tacos, soups, stews and even desserts.
Rice: As important as corn in Mexican
cuisine, rice or arroz is the base of many Mexican dishes. Arroz
con pollo, a rice-based chicken casserole is among the most popular
and widely recognized of Mexican dishes around the world.
Dried Beans: Called Frijoles in Mexico,
dried beans are another Mexican staple. They can be eaten any time
of the day either as the main dish or as an accompaniment to the
main dish. Frijoles are often prepared simply by simmering in water
with fresh native herbs such as epazote.
Tortillas: Prepared by turning corn or
wheat flour into a dough, which is then shaped into tiny, very thin
cakes. Tortillas are versatile and can be deep-fried as
chimichangas; filled, rolled and baked as enchiladas or eaten like
tacos stuffed with meats, beans and rice.
Chile peppers: Mexican cuisine
incorporates sixty different varieties of chile peppers from the
fiery-hot habañeros to the mild-tasting Anaheims. Smoked and
dried jalapeños, known as chipotle, provide the distinctive
flavor of the adobo sauce whereas stuffed poblano chilies are used
in Chiles Rellenos, a popular Mexican main course.
Avocado: Sliced avocados add extra flavor
to many soups whereas mashed avocados are the main ingredient in
guacamole. Even the leaves of the avocado plant find use in several
Mexican dishes.
Tomatoes: Used in fresh as well as cooked
salsas and in a variety of stews and rice dishes, tomatoes are a
favorite addition to several Mexican dishes.
Tomatillo: Also called husk tomatoes
because of the thin husk covering, boiled or roasted tomatillos
impart a tart taste to salsas and fish or meat dishes.
Jicama: A root vegetable, with a crisp
texture similar to raw potato, Jicama has a mild, slightly sweet
flavor and can be eaten boiled, steamed, baked or fried. It can
also be eaten raw in salads.
Cilantro: Fresh cilantro, which is the
green leaves of the coriander plant, is a must in every salsa. When
used in cooked dishes, it is added just before serving as it tends
to lose its flavor if cooked too long.
Chayote Squash: This pale green,
mild-flavored squash can be eaten raw, fried, pickled or stuffed.
Garlic: Garlic adds a distinctive flavor
to marinades, soups and sauces and is used to flavor almost every
Mexican dish.
Citrus: Introduced to the Mexicans by the
Spanish conquerors, bitter Seville oranges, limes and lemons are
integral to several Mexican dishes from tortilla soups to salsas
and ceviches. Small Mexican limes are used to give corn and meat
dishes a zing that would have been otherwise missing.
Even if you don't have Mexican
ingredients you can create a Mexican feel with these
Mexican cupcake toppers from our edible
cake topper range.

Diabetes
care is needed to monitor and make sure that the individual is
doing his part in taking care of himself. There are many ways to
keep your diabetes in check especially if you are still in the pre
diabetic stage, not the full blown one.
One of the things that you will need to be
aware of is your family history. If there is diabetes in most or
some of your family members who are directly related to you then
you must be vigilant regarding your diet and lifestyle in order not
to trigger diabetes. Diabetes care can be a tiring thing to keep up
so, do not start it if you can avoid it.
Part of diabetes care is also to have
regular general annual check ups in order to keep a close eye on
the progression of your disease. Visit your doctor in order to keep
abreast of what you diabetic state is and the dosage of your
maintenance medication. Diabetes care means that you must be
vigilant for any changes in your levels of blood sugar and to be
careful of your diet.
An eye exam is another diabetes care
regimen that you need to do yearly. Since diabetes affects the
eyes, and our eyes are an essential part f our daily lives, we need
to practice proper diabetes care by keeping our diets in check and
maintaining our blood sugar levels. Avoiding smoking is part of
diabetes care. Smoking increases the risk of narrowing of heart
disease and stroke. It also increases the risk of kidney disease
and nerve damage. These diseases are dangerous for people who have
diabetes. Above all, learn to manage stress. Stress is a large
factor in the production of hormones that could block insulin and
its effects.
Diabetes care is a continuous process in
which you have to be vigilant in monitoring your health. Once you
start diabetes care, you must keep in mind that this is a good way
of maintaining your well being and keeping you from risk of
death. |

While cooking can be one of the most
fulfilling activities of the day, if you don’t know the
safety rules of the kitchen, it can also be one of the most
dangerous. Most household accidents occur in the kitchen. Here are
some tips to help make your cooking experience pleasant and
safe.
Cooking is an enjoyable pastime for many
people. But along with the pleasures of creating a delicious meal
for your family and friends to enjoy comes the responsibility of
maintaining a safe and hazard-free working area. Here are some tips
to keep you safe in the kitchen.
How to Dress For Cooking
When cooking, you should dress comfortably
yet in a manner that helps you avoid burns and spills.
Shoes – You should wear flat-soled
shoes that help you balance as you move around the kitchen and help
to minimize falls. Cloth shoes are not recommended because these
shoes will absorb spilled liquid that will prolong burning if the
liquid is hot. Leather, close-toed shoes are the best type to
protect you from burns caused by spills and falls caused by
spills.
Clothing – Wear clothes that are
comfortable and easy to clean. The kitchen is not the place to wear
your favorite dress clothes – not only do you stand a chance
at ruining your favorite outfit, your cooking experience is less
relaxing because you worry about ruining your favorite outfit. Arm
and legs should be covered for protection; however, leggings should
not be worn – leggings will absorb hot liquids and prolong
burning of the skin.
Jewelry – Jewelry should be kept to
a minimum – to protect both you and your jewelry. Long,
dangling jewelry can pose safety hazards when working around
kitchen appliances.
Hair – Since hair is flammable, it
is important to keep hair contained by pulling it into a ponytail
or wearing a hair net. This will also help to keep loose hair out
of food and reduce the risk of hair getting caught in appliances,
such as blenders and mixers.
Nails – Long nails can pose a danger
to both your food and yourself. Long nails can harbor germs that
can contaminate your food. Long nails can also interfere with
proper knife skills and increase your risk of getting cut.
Sleeves – Loose sleeves can pose a
safety hazard when reaching over the stovetop or moving around the
kitchen, getting caught on appliances or knocking over bowls and
containers, creating spills.
Electrical Appliances
Electrical appliances like toasters, crock pots
grills, popcorn machines etc can pose many dangers and should be
treated with respect when working in the kitchen. Electrical
appliances can pose fire hazards as well as burn hazards and
hazards from spills. Here are some safety tips for electrical
appliances:
Always dry hands thoroughly before
unplugging an appliance.
Don’t pull on the cord when
unplugging – use the end that is designed for unplugging.
Keep appliances away from water
sources.
Be sure appliances are placed securely on
the work area before using.
An electrician should repair frayed cords
promptly.
Appliance cords should be kept as short as
possible in order to avoid tripping over the cord or knocking the
appliance over.
Don’t plug too many appliances into
one outlet.
To avoid burns when processing hot liquids
in the blender, be sure the lid is on tightly and cover the lid
with a towel.
Blenders should not be filled over half
full.
Recipes
Always read your recipe through from
beginning to end, to ensure you have everything you need. Even if
doing a simple
beef crock pot recipe it is important to know what you need to
do before you start. This will ensure you are prepared and
therefore less likely to have an accident, |

You are very serious about your
computer's security. From anti-spyware software to firewalls, your
computer has it all. There's no way you'll open an email before
it is checked for viruses and you have anti-virus software
installed just in case. You are completely protected, right? Well,
there is one other thing you should do to protect all
the data on your computer's hard drive. From digital photos of
special memories to important documents, you could lose it all if
you don't do regular backups.
After all, the most secure computer won't
be able to do a thing to protect your data if something happens to
your hard drive. You'll need to be sure you have a safe and secure
copy of your computer's data in another location. There are just
too many physical risks to your hard drive to neglect data backups.
Anything from a power surge to a house fire can rub out all of your
hard work in seconds if you don't have a backup for your files.
The time to rectify this situation is now. Deciding to wait another
day or so before you get around to making your backup could be a
decision that costs you your work.
If you are using your computer to store
information that could lose you money if it disappeared, you will
want to be doubly sure that you keep the data safe. Making a copy
of business data that you store on a disk in the same home your
computer is in doesn't protect you from losses due to fire, theft,
etc. Store that backup at another location, such as a friend's
house or your bank vault.
No matter how careful you are to back up
your computer, you are not being overly paranoid. If it can happen,
it will, especially if a data loss means you will be unable to meet
a job deadline or that you will lose irreplacable photos. A routine
that involves backing up data to two separate hard drives on the
same computer, then to a third external hard drive or zip drive is
a good first step. Adding an online file
backup service to the backup routine is a great second step.
Mozy is one of these online file backup services. Adding a file
server to the entire bundle isn't a bad idea, either.
If you are afraid that making a backup is
too hard or time consuming, don't be. You can find plenty of
equipment to help you, from internal or external hard drives to
online file storage systems. For small amounts of data, a DVD
backup or a small USB pen drive can work. In a pinch, backing up to
an email account with plenty of storage, such as Google or MSN, can
provide emergency backup storage. In fact, your biggest problem
will be deciding which of the many backup solutions is right for
you. As you read a bit more about data
backups you should be able to decide on the right option a bit
more easily. |

If you've never been the victim of a computer
virus you may think that all of the uproar over these nasty
little programs is making much ado out of nothing. You may even be
thinking that computer security experts and anti-virus companies
are using scare tactics to sell anti-virus software. After all, the
bigger the problem, the more software people buy. Today, the
anti-virus business is worth several billion dollars and it shows
no sign of slowing down.
So, with all of this money at risk, you
are certainly justified in wondering whether computer viruses
really are as big a problem as the industry says they are.
Unfortunately, the answer is that they
absolutely are. If you get a virus, you could actually lose your
money, your identity and your computer's hard drive. With new
viruses being developed constantly, the problem continues to grow.
While many viruses are more annoying than destructive, even a
"harmless" virus can use up valuable resources. The worst viruses
can spread worldwide in a few days and wreak unbelievable havoc.
The damage from one infamous virus can mean billions of dollars in
lost business opportunities and damaged equipment.
With all of this bad news, is there any
good news for computer users? Take this quick risk quiz:
1. Does your computer have antivirus
software installed on it?
If you can say yes, you are much less a
risk than people that don't have antivirus software. If you say
no, than it is only a matter of time until you find out about
viruses personally.
2. Does your computer have a firewall
installed on it?
If your response is yes again, you can
relax a bit. You're doing all you can do software wise to keep
your computer safe from a deadly virus. If you say no again, you
are leaving your computer wide open for an attack.
Despite all of the media attention paid to
antivirus software, people still have the "It can't happen to me."
mentality. They laugh off warnings to protect their computers and
say that they are working just fine. They think that because they
never actually initiate a file download or send and receive files
with friends, they are safe. A few months go by and suddenly they
can't get their computers to boot up forever and then when they
finally do start, they plod along at a snail's pace.
To make things worse, quite a few of these
computer users who leave their computers unprotected are actually
taking classes for computer related careers. They are completely at
sea when they have to try to repair the damage caused by a virus
filled computer. Perhaps a basic class on computer care and repair
is in order!
You are probably wondering how viruses
develop anyway. Hackers are the people creating these nasty bugs,
right? Actually, while some hackers may decide to create computer
viruses, most of them spend all of their waking hours attempting to
break in to the most secure and top secret systems they can find.
People who write viruses are people with an ax to grind. They want
to send a wake up message or show people that they are superior to
them. Today, many people are concerned that computer viruses could
be used as a terrorist weapon.
If you do get a computer virus, will you
lose everything on your hard drive? It actually is rare for this
type of virus to spread very fast or far. Annoying viruses that
stop you from starting your computer or using windows or those that
mail spoof emails to your entire email address book are much more
common. The hard drive is usually recoverable when the computer has
one of these viruses.
What about your financial and personal
information? Are viruses really likely to swipe them from the
computer. Absolutely. This is a common reason that viruses are
created and spread.
Is there any way to keep your computer
virus free? While no anti-virus software is foolproof, installing
one of these programs can provide some protection. While there are
anti-virus software programs that provide better protection, any of
them will help somewhat. Even free anti-virus programs are actually
able to ward off at least some viruses.
After reading this information on viruses
and anti-virus
software you have probably resolved to get protection for your computer
right away. If so, you won't be sorry. Dealing with viruses after
you are infected is frustrating and time consuming. It is so much
easier to keep a disaster from happening instead of trying to
reconstruct a ton of missing data and worry about identity or
financial thefts after the fact. |

With the number of identity theft
victims growing every day, it is no surprise that computer
security is a big concern for most computer users. With the
increase in attacks on computers and theft of sensitive
information, firewalls and virus protection programs have gone from
being rarely used on home computers to being things even the most
technologically challenged users want to have installed. After all,
noone wants to be the main character of a true life made for t.v.
story about hackers breaking into a family's home computer,
stealing their information, and then wiping the whole system out
with a nasty virus or trojan program.
If you are one of the computer users who
doesn't worry about computer security, it is time to start
worrying. Without protection, your computer is as open to attack as
a bank that leaves its doors unlocked after it closes. Without
virus protection and a firewall, it is just a matter of time until
you are the victim of an attack. Hopefully, it won't be serious
enough that you have to buy a new computer, or even worse, try to
repair your credit after someone stole your identity.
As dangerous as it is to have no security
at all on your computer, there are still many people who simply
don't bother to use it. They don't have even the most basic anti-virus
protection or firewall software on their computers. Still, they
happily open every email they receive, download files right and
left and surf iffy sites as if they have top of the line security.
If you talk to them about their lack of protection, they act as if
you are speaking a foreign language. Often, they say they've never
had a problem, but a quick check of their computers will reveal so
many viruses and annoying spyware programs that the poor systems
can barely manage to start up and do a few simple tasks.
Of course, not all the dangers are online.
Offline problems with identity theft are also growing at an
alarming speed. From withdrawing cash from your ATM to handing your
credit card to the waitstaff at your favorite restaurant, every
transaction is somewhat risky. Scammers continue to develop
techniques to steal identities and money, such as taking a quick
photo of your credit card with a camera phone or putting a reader
on the local ATM machine that sends your information to them.
Still, online problems continue to be a major concern, as well.
Now that you understand why computer
security is such a major concern with people who spend time
using computers, it is time to learn to protect your computer.
Don't worry that this task is only for tech heads. People who are
complete novices to the world of computers can still keep their
information safe and protect their computers. We have designed this
site to help you do just that by avoiding all of that technical
jargon that is so confusing to new computer users. Learn how to
protect your computer and the next time someone asks you about
computer security, you will be able to say that you have spyware
detection, virus protection and a firewall on your computer.

Brussels sprouts, these pretty rose
cabbages with a pronounced sweet and nutty flavor, have proven
their great ability to fight certain types of cancer, not to
mention other health benefits. Make them a regular part of your
diet to get good amounts of essential vitamins and build a natural
barrier against life-threatening cancer cells.
Originated in Belgium, where they are
still traditionally served during festivals, Brussels sprouts are
closely related to cabbage and even resemble it. Most recipes use
whole sprouts because of their decorative quality – miniature
cabbages look like pretty small rosebuds and indeed can make a dish
look appealing.
What Makes Brussels Sprouts So
Special
If you have been excluding Brussels
sprouts from your diets, think again. The nutritional value these
tiny veggies possess is truly amazing. Apart from a solid amount of
vitamin A and C, folic acid and dietary fiber, Brussels sprouts are
rich in folacin and potassium. Plant phytochemicals found in them
stimulate the body’s natural defense mechanisms against
various diseases, particularly cancer.
According to scientific research, Brussels
sprouts contain large quantities of sulforaphane, a potent
phytonutrient that boosts the body’s detoxification enzymes
by altering gene expression. This helps to clear potentially
carcinogenic substances from the body rather quickly. To activate
these body’s natural powers, only 100 grams of sprouts every
day is good enough.
Tips on Buying Brussels Sprouts
As the principle ‘the fresher the
better’ can be applied to all vegetables, Brussels sprouts
are no exception. Older ones will give that strong unpleasant
‘cabbage’ flavor, which is the reason some people,
especially children dislike Brussels sprouts. Choose small and hard
sprouts with tightly wrapped leaves. Avoid pieces with yellow or
brown leaves or leaves that are too loose. Brussels sprouts can be
kept in the fridge, but with each passing day they lose their
nutritional value and freshness, which promotes good taste.
How to Cook Brussels Sprouts
Similar to cabbage, you can cook Brussels
sprouts either briefly or braise them slowly in the oven. Remember
that long cooking time will kill most of the vitamins contained in
the sprouts. Ideally, boil them for about 3 minutes until just
tender and serve plain or fast fry with other vegetables. If the
recipe requires or you find it more convenient, you can cut the
sprouts into halves or quarters, or slice them thinly (for
stir-frying, for example).
Here are a couple of simple recipes to
help you create delicious meals in no time:-
Sweet and Sour Brussels Sprouts
Ingredients:
250 gm Brussels sprouts boiled till
tender
2tbsp cooking oil
¼ cup vinegar
1 tbsp sugar
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
Arrange sprouts in a shallow baking dish.
Mix oil, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper in a bowl. Pour this mix
over the sprouts. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake over medium heat until
the sprouts are soft.
Easy Herbed Brussels Sprouts
Ingredients:
650 gm Brussels sprouts
350 gm pureed tomatoes
½ cup green capsicum, chopped
½ tsp dried oregano
½ tsp salt
Wash, trim and cut into halves the
sprouts. Place remaining ingredients in a saucepan. Cook over
medium heat for 5 minutes, and then add the sprouts. Cover and cook
for 10-15 minutes or until the sprouts are soft.
If your like me, then you'll probably prefer this chocolate cupcake recipe than a brussel sprout
recipe. |

A closet is a very important component of
any home. The closet is used to store all the important things of
daily use, including shoes, coats and clothes. It is important for
you to store all these important things in a place that provides
you an easy access. You do not want to have to search for them when
you need them.
If things are not organized in your
closet, it may create a kind of mess, and you may not find the
right thing at the right time. This is where Closet storage
solutions come into action. The following tips will be a great help
in keeping the things organized in your closet.
Discarding Miscellaneous Items
It is the story of most of the homes that
their closets are filled with lots of miscellaneous items that have
not been used for long and are not likely to be used in the near
future. Such items mainly include unused clothing. The first thing
you should do to get things organized in your closet is to get rid
of such unused miscellaneous items.
Be Ruthless While Discarding Unused
Items
If you have not used an item for long and
are not going to use them in the near future, you will have to be
ruthless in removing those items from your closet. Always remember
that cluttering unnecessary things, are just going to make it
difficult for you to find the necessary things on time.
Identifying The Most Problematic
Area
The next big thing is to identify the most
problematic areas in your closet. It could be anything from the
area you keep your shirts, jackets etc to the place where you keep
your shoes. Once the area is identified, you will have to make
changes to get rid of the mess they are creating. For example, if
your shirts are getting problematic for you to store, you may like
to purchase an organizer for them.
Likewise, if the shoes that are creating a
problem, you may like to buy separate shoe racks or shoe boxes to
store them. If keeping the shoes in large numbers in a rack is a
problem, you will certainly like to keep each pair in a separate
box instead of dumping them on each other.
It might sound strange, but if you are
creative enough, you can even use the floor of the closet to
organize things in a proper manner. Feel free to use the above
tips, and I am sure that the next time you require a specific thing
from the closet; you will not have to spend much time finding
it. |

We all understand what it's like
returning home after a hectic day and longing for some rapid
relaxation and relief from stress. Countless people prefer to opt
for that swift 'pick me up' drink; As an alternative why not soak
away your stresses? One of the finest ways you are able to sit
outside and take pleasure in your back patio is to install a hot
tub and let the refreshing water wash away the stresses and strains
of the day.
Ancient cultures understood the
therapeutic benefits of naturally occurring hot and cold springs.
The Romans constructed bath houses as they appreciated the healing
power of hot springs.
Hippocrates was a great advocate of
drinking and bathing in spring water 4 thousand years before the
birth of Christ. As you can see owning your own hot tub would put
you in illustrious company.
Thanks to the Jacuzzi brothers; a huge hot
tub and spa industry with many manufacturers has grown for our
benefit. These brothers also realized the benefits of moving warm
water early on and developed a pump that would become the jets in a
regular tub. We have them to thank. The hot tubs of today are
extremely high tech and know just where to place the jets for
optimum relief.
The latest style hot tubs can incorporate
lights, TV's, music and much more. You may even have a remote
control that will switch on the tub and warm up the water. You may
opt for a type of hot tub with a vertical seating position as you
may not wish to be in a lounging position. Hot tubs and Spas are
well suited for whole of body treatments with the water reaching
about shoulder height for optimum stress relief. A hot tub can help
provide relief for urinary and bladder conditions, minor colds and
slight fevers. The duration of a dip in the hot tub should be about
20 minutes.
Hot tubs operate by the circulation of
warm water and air via a number of high powered jets that provide
muscle stimulation and a general relaxation of the whole body. The
high power jets are cleverly located to provide relief to various
muscle groups at the same time.
The jets can be concentrated to target a
certain body area in a similar way to that of the hands of a
